CRCA Board of Directors Meets in Saskatoon, November 1 – 3, 2023

November 2023

In less than 18 months, the CRCA has undergone significant change presenting new opportunities going forward. Mr. Lindsay Pochynuk, President and Chair of the Board, focused on this theme as he welcomed the CRCA board of director members to his home city of Saskatoon, SK. With six new directors and a new executive director, the task of renewing CRCA’s strategic plan aligns nicely.

The board began its time together with a strategic planning exercise. After surveying the membership in September, this information was used to update CRCA’s purpose and vision statements and formed the basis of new strategic objectives going forward. The value of members’ input should not be understated; in the weeks ahead, members will be given a second opportunity to provide input.

CRCA directors debated and affirmed four themes as strategic objectives for the next three years:

• Be the voice of roofing in Canada.

• Lobby the federal government and owner groups.

• Attract workers.

• Set industry standards.

Staff will develop specific timelines and tactics for each strategic objective. The board of directors will finalize the strategic plan at its February 2024 meeting.

During the board of directors meeting itself, directors were updated on the most recent CRCA activities including the work of the National Technical Committee (NTC) and outreach/lobbying work. The NTC is undergoing an effort to update its terms of reference, complete existing research and develop new joint venture research projects with the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC). Two new research projects were approved to begin in 2024; a third is pending.

The latest outreach and lobbying work include building alliances with owner groups, design authority national industry associations, the federal department of Public Services and Procurement Canada, and recent efforts with the federal Minister of Immigration to improve immigration programs for roofers into Canada.

The board approved membership dues for 2024 and 2025, the location of the 2025 conference (Quebec City), and the 2026 location will be confirmed in the months ahead and reviewed new membership benefits programs.

After freezing dues since 2018, the board decided on the following dues increase for 2024:

Beginning fiscal year 2025, the board decided to build in an annual 2% cost of living escalator for dues.

Contractors’ dues will continue to be collected through the CRCA’s eight affiliate association members.
